I’m sure almost everyone has had those moments in their life when they have had to question if they are awake or dreaming. Certain events in my life have suddenly, and sometimes uncomfortably, awakened me to the workings in that unseen (spiritual) part of life that no one fully understands. One of those events happened in the first month I was hanging with my songwriting partner, Danny.
Danny lived on a beautiful piece of property in California near Lake Tahoe where he had a jam room set up. He would invite musicians over daily to write, jam and socialize. My friend David invited me to his place and we all bonded quickly over a few late night jams and conversations. Eventually I became very fond of Danny and his friends and felt a real connection and sense of destiny in our meeting.
One night Danny, David and I were on Danny’s front driveway looking at the clear country stars. We were all sipping on some beers, singing harmonies and passing around a mandolin. We got to talking about destiny and how we all felt that we were meant to meet. We examined a long line of seemingly random events that led us right there on that driveway. We were circling around the questions “Is this friendship a divine destiny? Where we all meant to meet or was it just random?” Little did we know, that question would be answered shortly.
We all started getting a bit of an erie feeling that we just couldn’t shake. It wasn’t necessarily scary, just a feeling that we were about to go a little further down the rabbit hole. Almost immediately following our conversation we started seeing a strange light floating around. We were on a desolate, gated, piece of land and couldn’t figure out what could possible be emitting light.. We had to check it out.. As we approached the gate at the end of the driveway the light was no where to be found. After a few minutes of discussing what it could have been, we laid down, once again, on the driveway.
After laying in silence for ten minutes Danny started playing a very unique chord pattern on the mandolin. As I listened something started bubbling up in me almost like I was about to sneeze. Without planning any words or melody I emitted the words “I'm a little tum tum.” What blew my world apart was that, at precisely that same time and in the same melody, Danny sung the exact same words! We looked at each other with an utter look of disbelief for what had just happened. We had both not intended to sing anything and neither of us knew what “I’m a little tum tum” could possibly mean. We had to confirm with our friend David that it had actually happened. It took a minute to convince him that we were not playing a joke on him.
After the shock wore off we remembered what we were talking about before this ‘tum tum” incident. We were asking if we were destined to be on that driveway together and we got our answer in a way we never could have guessed! A few months later Danny and I started our band ‘Brotherly Mud’ never questioning if it was the right move. I think deep down we both know that we will always be tum tums :)
